Almost Time for Annual Post

Went to Books A Million this past Saturday to catch up with my Charleston friends. Enjoyed an afternoon of Scrabble and catching up with the gang. Shelley showed up as well and Huntington was well represented for the first time in a while.

Life gets busy!!! Hopefully, will be able to show up a little bit more.

Mountain State Open Begins Next Friday!!!

The first ever Huntington, WV Scrabble Tournament, AKA the "Mountain State Open" begins next weekend September 11-13th.

To date we have 14 entries for the early bird and 21 for the main draw.

There are players from West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee including a few local first timers!

We are looking forward to a great first tournament and there is still time to enter.

Rumor has it John Spangler, co-director from Lexington Club 637, has brought forth from the mighty Bluegrass State a tentative I-64 Morehead smackdown challenge in October.
The West Virginia native should know better...although I recall taking a mighty beating myself the last time one of John's Kentucky colleagues played me at Java Joint.
As always, we're open for Fall festivities in Morehead in October, or perhaps Ashland.
We'll just have to wait and see what the planning committee comes up with!

Pennsylvania and West Virginia Friends Unite for Smackdown!

The mighty members of Club 620 and 767 competed with vigor Saturday July 18th in a WV vs PA tournament, dubbed the "Smackdown".
6 members from each state went head to head through 6 rounds. After an exhilirating day West Virginia's Club Director from #767, Brad Mills, proudly hoisted the first annual traveling WV vs PA Smackdown trophy and after a team picture of the collective nerdy bunch we all headed home.
We all had a great time of fun and fellowship, and as usual Terry taught me a new word or two (e.g. CHANTAGE= blackmail) on her way to my sound thumping.
Panera bread was a fun atmosphere, the food was great, and it made for a relaxing and blessed Saturday.
Thanks to all the organizers for their hard work and dedication to the game we love so much.
And to Andrew, the most well behaved and smartest 4-year-old I've ever met, I am sure one day you will be facing off against PA with us as well if your parents have anything to do with it.
Stay tuned for future announcement regarding Huntington Club 767 next meeting at Java Joint in August. Due to schedules we are most likely going to go to one meeting per month.

Summer Break!

Since most of the Huntington people are scattered for the summer, namely the Director, we will be having a meeting hiatus.

I hope to participate in the Scrabble in Clarksburg smackdown July 18th and am looking forward to facing Terry once again seeing that we dodged each other at the most recent tournament.

The Mountain State Open in Huntington scheduled for September 11-13th is going well and we have 14 participants entered at this time.

Our NASPA information and club fee has been submitted and we should have our official designation switch soon.

My mother Rosemary and her boyfriend Steve, were in town this week, and of course, we play Scrabble until the wee hours. The final game, however, went down in my anecdotal record books as one of the best play out bingos I had ever witnessed in 5 years of social and competitive Scrabble.

I was comfortably leading with 240, Steve 176 and mom with 165 with no letters left in the bag. I held IISU, mom GINROW, and Steve held 7 tiles one of which was the last blank, DELNPU*. It was Steve's turn with no way to win in site, or at least I thought.

Study the board (with Steve's final play removed) and see if you can find where to put Steve's incredible bingo out play for 88 points and the win.

Anyone who gets the right answer and comes to Club deserves a special prize.

AND THAT SPECIAL FIRST PERSON TO CORRECTLY FIGURE IT OUT WAS MARTHA!!!

Books-A-Million a Blast!

I talked my wife and children into shopping at the Charleston mall (very little arm twisting required) while I enjoyed a great afternoon with our friends from Club #620 at Books-A-Million.

There were 8 in attendance, but noticeably absent were Martha and the new queen of Scrabble herself-- Tina, who I am assuming was busy brushing up on her game by playing a few rounds with Nigel Richards, or perhaps was making a new board for Joe Edley.

The snacks were tasty, the atmosphere bustling, and the games loads of fun as usual. The full results will be posted on the Club # 620 website soon.

Saturday Results

I cannot discuss Rob's whereabouts for fear of a HIPAA violation. Only Shelley braved the snow and cold, so we played two games before Shelley ran off to sing Alto tonight. The first game had letter maldistribution in my favor and several nonchallenged phonies (YAGG*, WOG*, and LUB*)which led to a lopsided affair.

Game two was a different story as Shelley opened with RUMBLED (78) and never looked back. I tried to climb back with a few more phonies, SHOPE* being one of them, but even they could not help. This was Shelley's first victory against me, and well deserved as she continues to prove herself an up and coming star, especially as she begins to accumulate tournament matches under her belt.

December Meetings

We will have our December meetings on the 6th and 20th. To continue to grow and get people excited about playing we are going to try a new venue --the New Baptist Church (http://www.newbaptistchurch.com).

As usual we will meet from 1-4 pm. I plan to have snacks and drinks for everyone and am looking forward to some new players trying club out. Please invite a friend or two!

Our inaugural Club #767 meeting was a success!

We had three Huntingtonians vs three non-Huntingtonians battling it out. The H-towners went 5-4, non-H-towners 4-5. A plethora of bingos were played (17).

I invited two para-Scrabblers, Zabeth and Dillon, both Marshall students, who were enjoying a game on the old-school Java board, to join us anytime and gave them my card to send me their email addresses in case they wanted on the invite list.
